Adjusting the color profile of your monitor can significantly improve the accuracy and consistency of colors displayed on your screen. Whether you're working on graphic design, photo editing, or simply want better color representation, this guide will walk you through the steps to change the color profile of your monitor on both macOS and Windows.

Changing the Color Profile on macOS

Step 1: Open System Settings

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Access Display Settings

  1. In the System Settings window, click on Displays in the sidebar.
  2. If you have multiple monitors connected, select the one you wish to adjust.

Step 3: Change the Color Profile

  1. Under the Color Profile section, click on the Color Profile drop-down menu.
  2. You'll see a list of available color profiles. macOS typically recommends the most suitable profile for your display.
  3. To preview a profile, click on it. The display will temporarily switch to that color profile, allowing you to see the difference.
  4. Once you find a profile that suits your needs, click to select it. The display will now use the chosen color profile.

Step 4: Calibrate (Optional)

  1. If you’re not satisfied with any of the preset profiles, you can create a custom profile by clicking the Calibrate button (may appear as Color LCD depending on your version of macOS).
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a custom profile using the Display Calibrator Assistant.

Changing the Color Profile on Windows

Step 1: Open Settings

  1. Click the Start menu and select Settings (gear icon).
  2. In the Settings window, select System.

Step 2: Access Display Settings

  1. In the System settings, click on Display in the left sidebar.
  2. Scroll down and click on Advanced display settings.

Step 3: Access Color Management

  1. In the Advanced display settings, click on Display adapter properties for Display 1 (or the relevant display if you have more than one).
  2. In the new window, go to the Color Management tab.
  3. Click on the Color Management... button.

Step 4: Change the Color Profile

  1. In the Color Management window, select the Devices tab.
  2. Ensure the correct monitor is selected in the Device drop-down menu.
  3. Check the box labeled Use my settings for this device.
  4. To change the profile, click the Add... button.
  5. Choose from the list of available color profiles or browse for a specific one if you have a custom ICC profile saved on your computer.
  6. Select the desired profile and click OK.

Step 5: Set as Default Profile

  1. After adding the profile, make sure it’s selected in the list under Profiles associated with this device.
  2. Click the Set as Default Profile button to apply the selected color profile.

Step 6: Calibrate (Optional)

  1. For more precise adjustments, you can calibrate the monitor by clicking on the Advanced tab in the Color Management window.
  2. Click on Calibrate display under Display Calibration.
  3. Follow the Display Color Calibration tool's instructions to fine-tune the display's color settings.
